The age of first time users is getting younger & younger – thus they are at greater risk of becoming addicted.
South Africans, specifically those residing in the Western Cape, are all too aware of the large numbers of substance users in our communities. Apart from training people in how to work with substance users and treating those requiring help we have a responsibility to assist individuals when making choices around drugs.
A greater number of school youths are experimenting with drugs, and more often than not are starting with the “harder drugs” – Tik and Heroin. Many people feel that using only becomes a problem once an individual is addicted, but EVERY substance user runs into problems and their life is negatively impacted long before the point of addiction.
How do we assist?
- Teacher training courses
- Addressing parents
- Student workshops
- School drug policies
